Public Access Plan for Federally Funded Research

 In February 2013, the White House Office of Science and Technology Policy issued the memorandum Increasing Access to the Results of Federally Funded Scientific Research. The memo requires Federal agencies with research budgets more than $100 million to develop plans increasing public access to Federally funded research results - publications and data.

Since then, each Federal agency has issued its own plan with their particular requirements, though all require a data management plan (DMP) and data and reports to be made publicly accessible. The ITS Library is here to assist you meeting these requirments. Here are the policies from Federal agencies most likely to fund transportation research: 

Department of Transportation
DOT Public Access Portal 

  • Submit a DMP
  • Maintain project record in the Research in Progress (RiP) database
  • Submit ORCIDs for all project investigators and contributors
  • Deposit datasets in a repository
  • Submit final report, contracted deliverables, and required metadta to USDOT Research Hub, NTL, and TRB

Department of Energy
DOE Public Access Plan

  • Submit a DMP
  • Deposit datasets in a repository
  • Submit final report, peer-reviewed publications, and required documentation to DOE PAGES http://www.osti.gov/pages/
  • 12 month embargo for peer-reviewed publications

National Science Foundation
NSF Public Access Plan

  • Deposit datasets in a repository
  • Deposit final accepted peer-reviewed manuscript be deposited in a an appropriate repository
